The comprehensive critical edition "Leoš Janáček's Correspondence" has been co-operated on by the Department of Musicology, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University and the Department of the History of Music, Moravian Museum in Brno.

Funded by the Czech Science Foundation the project is registered under P 409-12-0254 and it is a continuation of the project no. 408/07/0536.

The project is also co-funded by the Leoš Janáček Foundation.

The edition primarily includes a correspondence stored in the Janáček Archive of the Department of the History of Music, Moravian Museum. This collection holds nearly 14.000 items and it constitutes more than 95% of Janáček's correspondence located so far. It also encompasses copies of the composer's correspondence from other institutions or private collections. Other correspondence items from various institutions, private collections and also second-hand bookshops and auctions are continuously incorporated in the database. The documents whose originals were not preserved but were transcribed in contemporary editions or printed materials are added as well. The database software structure introduces not only a diplomatic document transcript, as stated in the project editorial principles, and a detailed description including the Janáček research specifics, but also in-depth notes and English annotations. The database is searchable by basic parameters (a call number, date and person), it is possible to perform an advanced search (a location, key words etc.) and parameters can also be combined, including a fulltext search. The original document digital copies, which are also embodied in the database, can be researched in a reading room of the Department of the History of Music, Moravian Museum. Requests for this copy research outside the Moravian Museum reading room are to be sent to

The database is available for free upon registration.
